This is a 90-minute guided walking tour of Canterbury's historic center, led by a fully qualified Green Badge guide through medieval lanes and the Cathedral Precincts. You'll hear the city's layered past—pilgrims and plague, kings and murder, Becket and Chaucer—as the guide moves you through the streets where these events unfolded. The tour includes access to the Cathedral Precincts grounds, which only the official tours reach, and children get an activity sheet to follow along.

The Experience

The guide meets you in the city center and walks you through the medieval streets for 90 minutes, moving at a pace that lets you stand and listen. You'll pass through the largest medieval gateway in England, enter the Cathedral Precincts, and see the grounds of the historic King's School. The guide stops at each place long enough to tell you what happened there—not just the famous names, but the texture of how the city changed: pilgrims arriving, plague spreading, peasants revolting, writers and artists passing through. Children get a printed activity sheet and history trail to follow, so younger travelers have something to do with their hands while the guide talks.

The tours run daily at 11am, with an additional 2pm departure from April through October and on seasonal holidays. All the guides hold Green Badges, which means they've completed the accredited training course and passed the Institute of Tourist Guiding exams—they're not volunteers or casual storytellers. The route is wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller. Well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome if you contact the tour operator in advance. If you're traveling with someone who has a disability, carers get in free.
