The experience
The tour begins with pickup from your Marsa Alam hotel and a long-distance drive to Cairo in a private, air-conditioned vehicle. Your guide (a trained Egyptologist who speaks your language) travels with you the entire way, with scheduled rest stops to break up the journey. This is not a group experience: the vehicle, the guide's attention, and the pace are yours alone.
At Giza, you stand in front of the three pyramids built as royal tombs over 4,500 years ago. The largest, built for King Cheops around 2500 BC, used over two million stone blocks, each weighing between two and fifteen tons. From the highest point on the plateau, all three pyramids come into view together. The Great Sphinx (70 meters long and 22 meters high, carved from a single piece of limestone with the body of a lion and the head of a human) has guarded the site for 4,500 years. You see it close enough to notice the missing nose, which was once a meter long, and the tail wrapped around its right foot. Entry to both the pyramids and the Sphinx is included.
Next is the Grand Egyptian Museum, located a few miles west of Cairo with a direct view of the Giza Pyramids from inside. The museum holds over 100,000 artifacts of ancient Egypt, including the complete treasures of King Tutankhamun (his golden mask, sarcophagus, and scepter) plus objects from the Greco-Roman period. Lunch at a local restaurant is included before or after the museum visit. If you wish, your guide can arrange a stop at Cairo's papyrus or perfume shops on the return journey. The tour ends with drop-off back at your Marsa Alam hotel.
