The experience

You're picked up from your hotel around 2 a.m. for the drive to Hurghada Airport, then fly to Cairo where a guide meets you for the full day. The Egyptian Museum comes first: a two-hour stop where your guide walks you through 120,000 exhibits, focusing on Tutankhamun's golden coffin and the grave goods buried with him. After lunch, you head to Giza to see the three pyramids: Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus. You can explore on foot, horseback or camel, spending two to three hours in the complex.

From the pyramids, a short stop at the Great Sphinx follows: the limestone monument carved with a human head and lion's body, sitting near the temple that once served it. If your return flight leaves late enough, the tour adds time at Khan el-Khalili, the medieval bazaar in Old Cairo, or Cairo Festival City, a massive air-conditioned shopping mall with international brands and restaurants. A felucca ride on the Nile is available for an extra fee. The papyrus museum and essential oil factory can also fit in if time remains, showing how ancient Egyptian techniques are still practiced. You're driven back to Hurghada Airport and transferred to your hotel in Marsa Alam by evening.

Three bottles of mineral water come with you in the vehicle during the day tour. The guide speaks English, Italian, French, German and one additional language. Entrance fees to the pyramids and museum, restaurant drinks, and the Nile boat trip are separate costs. The transfer from your Marsa Alam hotel to Hurghada Airport is also not included in the price.
