The Experience

The drive out of Marsa Alam starts early—still dark, honestly. Our guide, Ahmed, met us right at the hotel lobby with a big smile and some tips about what to expect (bring snacks for the road, he said). The desert air was cool before sunrise. By the time we reached Aswan, the Nile shimmered under a bright sky. First stop: the Aswan High Dam. It’s massive up close—way bigger than I pictured—and Ahmed explained how it changed life here for good. You can actually feel the breeze coming off Lake Nasser.

Next up was the Unfinished Obelisk. There’s something wild about seeing ancient stonework just left mid-process; you can still spot chisel marks if you look close. After that, we took a small boat out to Philae Temple. The island is quiet except for birds and the sound of water slapping against the rocks. Walking through those columns as Ahmed pointed out old carvings felt like stepping back in time.

Lunch was at a local spot—nothing fancy but really tasty grilled chicken and fresh bread. Later in the afternoon, we hopped on a felucca for a short sail along the Nile. The river’s calm at that hour; you’ll see fishermen casting nets and kids waving from the shore.

The next morning meant an early start again—Abu Simbel is worth it though. We got there just as sunlight hit Ramses II’s statues. It’s quieter before tour buses arrive, so you get space to take it all in. Inside, those wall carvings are sharp even after thousands of years. Ahmed shared stories about how they moved the whole temple when Lake Nasser was built—hard to believe until you see it yourself.
