PickupAt your hotel

Dolphins work the reef on their own schedule, and you're in the water when they do.

Swim and snorkel with spinner dolphins at Sataya Reef, a Red Sea reef near Marsa Alam, on a 10-hour boat trip with hotel pickup, professional guide, snorkeling equipment, and lunch onboard. The reef is a natural habitat where dolphins hunt and rest, so encounters happen in open water rather than a controlled setting. Pickup from Marsa Alam hotels is included; some distant hotels carry an additional fee.

The Experience

The boat leaves from Marsa Alam marina after hotel pickup and a scenic drive to the coast. You'll board a spacious vessel equipped for comfort and safety, then sail out to Sataya Reef—also called Dolphin House Reef—where the water stays clear and the marine life is dense. A professional guide briefs you on snorkeling technique and safety before you enter the water, and snorkeling equipment is provided onboard. The reef itself is the draw: colorful coral gardens, schools of exotic fish, and the spinner dolphins that hunt and rest here. They move through the water fast and unpredictably, so sightings are not guaranteed, but the reef is a known hotspot for encounters.

You'll make two snorkeling stops during the day, both at the reef. Between them, the boat's sun deck is where you rest, dry off and eat. Lunch is an open buffet served onboard, with unlimited water, soft drinks, hot drinks and fresh seasonal fruit. The guide stays with the group throughout, pointing out marine life and answering questions. A waterproof camera or GoPro works well for capturing moments underwater, though the focus is on the experience itself rather than the footage.

The full day runs 10 hours from pickup to drop-off. Children and infants are welcome; small children can ride in a stroller to the marina, and infants sit on an adult's lap during the boat ride. The activity suits all fitness levels—snorkeling requires no prior experience, and you control how long you stay in the water at each stop. The guide speaks English, Italian or German depending on the group.

Top questions

Do I need snorkeling experience to join this trip?

No. Snorkeling equipment is provided onboard, and the guide gives a brief orientation before you enter the water. The activity suits all fitness levels, and you can stay in the water as long as you're comfortable.

What are spinner dolphins, and why do they come to Sataya Reef?

Spinner dolphins are small, acrobatic dolphins known for leaping and spinning out of the water. Sataya Reef is a natural resting and hunting ground for them, so they're often present, though sightings are not guaranteed since they move freely in open water.

Is the dolphin encounter in a tank or in the open water?

It's in open water at Sataya Reef, their natural habitat. You enter the water where the dolphins live and hunt, not in a controlled or enclosed setting.

What's included in the price, and what costs extra?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, the boat, snorkeling equipment, a professional guide, lunch, and unlimited drinks and fruit are all included. The national park fee is 10 EUR per person, paid separately. Some distant hotels from Marsa Alam may have an additional pickup fee.

How long is the full day, and what time does it start?

The trip runs 10 hours total from hotel pickup to drop-off. The exact start time depends on your hotel location and the marina schedule; confirm with the operator when you book.

Can I bring my own camera or GoPro underwater?

Yes, a waterproof camera or GoPro works well for capturing moments. The guide can help you position yourself for good shots, though the focus is on experiencing the reef and dolphins directly.
