The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup and moves by air-conditioned car to Dahshur, where you'll enter two pyramids: the Pyramid of Khufu (also called the Pyramid of Ka) and the red pyramid, both built for King Snefru. Dahshur holds the second-oldest royal cemetery in Egypt, and walking inside these structures gives you a sense of their scale and the precision of their construction that photographs don't convey. From there you travel to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built in the 3rd Dynasty: the world's oldest major stone structure and a turning point in how the ancient Egyptians built tombs.
The final stretch takes you to the Giza Plateau and the three great pyramids: Khufu (the Great Pyramid and the last surviving wonder of the ancient world), Khafre (which appears taller because of its elevated foundation and still shows traces of its original casing stones), and Menkaure (the smallest of the three). Your guide explains the engineering theories behind their construction and walks you through the complex. You'll also visit the Valley Temple of Khafre, where mummification rituals took place, and see the Great Sphinx. A stop at the panoramic viewpoint gives you the classic sight of all three pyramids aligned across the desert skyline. Camel or horse riding is available there as an optional extra.
The full day runs 8 to 10 hours depending on how long you spend at each site. Lunch is included, along with snacks, water and coffee throughout the day. Your guide speaks English and is available in Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language. Note that pyramid entry tickets for Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur are not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately.
