The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you first to Islamic Cairo, where the Saladin Citadel rises above the city. Built in 1183 AD as a fortress against the Crusaders, it sits high enough to show you how Cairo spreads below it. Inside, the Mohamed Ali Alabaster Mosque dominates: an Ottoman design brought from Istanbul by the architect Yousif Boushnaq, who built it for Mohamed Ali, Egypt's ruler from 1805 to 1849. The mosque follows the same proportions as the Blue Mosque of Sultan Ahmed, only smaller, and the light through its windows is the thing most visitors photograph.

From there you cross into Old Cairo, where the Hanging Church sits above what remains of the Babylon fortress: two towers that once guarded the Roman settlement. The church itself dates to the 3rd century and hangs suspended between those ancient stones. Nearby, the Church of Abu Serga holds a holy crypt beneath its floor, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue stands as a third faith in the same quarter. The route moves you through three religions and fourteen centuries without you navigating streets or waiting for transport.

An optional lunch stop breaks the morning if you want one. The tour ends with drop-off at your hotel. If you book the car and driver only, you arrive at each site independently.
