The Experience

We pulled away from our Cairo hotel just after breakfast—still half awake, honestly—and our guide Hossam greeted us with this easy smile that made the early start less painful. The city was already humming, horns and all. First stop: the Grand Egyptian Museum. I’m not usually a “museum person,” but wandering those echoey halls with Hossam pointing out little details (like how the paint on some sarcophagi still clings after thousands of years) actually got under my skin. There was this faint smell of old paper and dust—kind of comforting, weirdly. I tried an interactive screen about pharaohs and totally failed the quiz. Hossam laughed and told me I’d have made a terrible scribe.

After that we drove up to the Citadel of Saladin, which sits above the city like it’s keeping watch. The Alabaster Mosque inside is something else—the way sunlight hits those creamy walls makes everything glow gold for a second when you step in. There was a group of kids practicing Arabic recitation nearby; their voices bounced off the stone in this gentle way. The afternoon took us through Old Cairo’s tangled lanes to the Hanging Church. You don’t really get how “hanging” it is until you’re inside and see those wooden beams over empty space below—my stomach did a little flip looking down through the glass floor panel. The air was cooler there, almost sweet with incense. We stopped at St. Sergius too; Hossam told us about the crypt where Mary and Joseph supposedly hid with baby Jesus, which felt quietly heavy somehow. Lunch was somewhere nearby—a simple plate of koshari that tasted better than anything fancy right then.

I still think about that view from the Citadel sometimes—the city stretching out in every direction, minarets poking up through haze, calls to prayer drifting on the wind.
