The experience

You leave your Alexandria hotel and ride two hours to Giza, where the Pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus stand as they have for 4,500 years. The Great Sphinx comes next. You stand in front of it, not behind a crowd at a viewpoint. After the Valley Temple, the itinerary moves to the Step Pyramid of Zoser, the world's earliest colossal stone structure, built during the 3rd Dynasty. Lunch at a local restaurant breaks the morning, then you travel to Memphis, the ancient capital founded by King Menes. There you see the Statue of Ramses II and the alabaster Sphinx of Memphis before returning to your Cairo hotel to rest.

Day two takes you through Cairo's layers. The Egyptian Museum holds 250,000 artifacts spanning 5,000 years of Pharaonic art: the scale alone justifies the time. From there, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali sits within the Citadel of Salah El Din; the Hanging Church, with its wooden roof shaped like Noah's ark, dates from the 7th century; and Ben Ezra Synagogue, Egypt's oldest, anchors the religious quarter. The tour ends at Khan El Khalili, Cairo's old bazaar where you browse stalls selling brassware, copper, perfumes, leather, silver, gold and antiques. A driver then returns you to Alexandria.

The guide speaks your language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or seven others are available. Transport is private and air-conditioned throughout. Bottled water travels with you each day. Entrance fees to every site and both lunches plus breakfast are settled before you book, so no surprises arrive at the gate or the restaurant.

What's the Step Pyramid of Zoser, and why does it matter?

The Step Pyramid of Zoser is the world's earliest colossal stone structure, built for King Djoser during the 3rd Dynasty. It marks the moment ancient Egypt began building in stone at monumental scale, and you see it on the first day after the Sphinx and Valley Temple.

Khan El Khalili is Cairo's centuries-old bazaar stocked with brassware, copper, perfumes, leather, silver, gold and antiques. The itinerary lists it as a shopping tour on day two, though the exact duration isn't specified. You browse at your own pace before the return drive to Alexandria.
