The Experience

We’d barely left the dock in Puerto Ayora when the boat picked up speed, wind tugging at my hair and salt already on my lips. The ride out to Santa Fe Island was quicker than I expected—maybe 50 minutes? I kept watching the color of the water shift from deep blue to this unreal turquoise. Our guide, Diego, kept joking about “sea lion etiquette,” which sounded like a joke until we actually got there. The bay looked almost fake—so calm it felt like we were sneaking into some private pool. And then you hear them: sea lions barking from the rocks, flopping around on the sand. Some of the younger ones slid right into the water as soon as we got our snorkels on. One came so close I could see its whiskers twitching when it spun past me. Some folks wandered off with Diego looking for marine iguanas (I joined for a bit; they really do look prehistoric), but mostly I just lay back and listened to nothing except waves and maybe one pelican squawking somewhere behind me.
