The Experience

I didn’t expect to hear that crunch — it was just a giant tortoise, maybe two arm’s lengths away, chewing on grass like it had all the time in the world. We’d barely started walking through the Galapagos Frontier reserve when our guide, José (he’s lived here forever), pointed out how you can tell their age by the rings on their shells. He handed me a cup of cold guava juice, which tasted so sweet after the humidity. I tried to take a photo but honestly, I just ended up watching them for way too long. There’s something about seeing these huge creatures move so slowly that makes you slow down too.

The forest here is thick and sort of tangled — branches above us, roots underfoot. José kept stopping to show us tiny finches (Darwin’s finches, he said, like it was obvious) and some yellow bird I forgot the name of. The air smelled green — not sure how else to say it — with this sharp citrus note every time we passed an orange or tangerine tree. At one point I heard an owl call overhead and José grinned: “That’s Tito Alba.” He has this way of making you feel like you’re part of his daily walk, not just tagging along.

I’d never been inside a lava tunnel before. The ground felt cool and damp under my hands when I touched the wall — almost glassy in places, rough in others. Stalactites hung low enough that even I had to duck (I’m not tall). It was darker than I thought it would be; our voices echoed weirdly off the stone. José explained how these tunnels formed thousands of years ago when the islands were still young — he made it sound like yesterday. At some point someone tripped on a root and we all laughed, which broke up the silence nicely.

Afterwards we wandered back past avocado trees heavy with fruit, and José pointed out more birds I couldn’t name but wish I could remember. The whole day felt unhurried — no one rushed us along or made us stick to a script. Even now when I think about that first slow encounter with the tortoises, everything else gets quieter for a second.
