Run the Pastaza's hardest sections with guides who handle the commands

Extreme rafting on the Pastaza River near Baños takes you through Level III and IV rapids with a professional guide, helmet, life jacket and all rowing gear included. The day runs 5.5 hours: a 40-minute drive through the Route of the Waterfalls, instruction and safety briefing at the river, the rapids themselves, then lunch with four food choices before return to the city by 2:30 pm.

The Experience

The Pastaza River near Baños runs some of the hardest whitewater in Ecuador, and this trip takes you straight into Level III and IV sections. You don't need rafting experience—only the willingness to take commands from your guide and paddle hard when they call it. A private vehicle picks you up and drives 40 minutes to the put-in, and the route passes through the Route of the Waterfalls on the way, so you see the landscape before you hit the water.

At the river, your guide walks through the basics: rowing commands, how to brace yourself in the boat, what to do if you go overboard. Then you're on the water for the main event. The guide handles the steering and the route-finding; your job is to paddle when instructed and hold on when the current picks up. The rapids demand focus and timing, which is what makes them worth the trip.

After you come off the water, lunch waits—chicken, meat, tilafish, or vegetables, your choice. You finish by 2:30 pm and head back to Baños. Everything is included: the ride there and back, helmet, life jacket, wetsuit, shoes, and a photo CD of the day.

What’s included

  • Private transportation to and from the Pastaza River.
  • professional guide in English or Spanish.
  • helmet, life jacket, wetsuit and shoes.
  • all rowing gear.
  • lunch with a choice of four meals.
  • photo CD of the activity.

Is this one for you?You paddle the boat yourself under the guide's commands, so this suits anyone who wants to be active in the rapids rather than watch them pass. The Level III and IV difficulty means you need moderate fitness and comfort with fast water, but the guide's control of steering and route-finding keeps the day manageable for strong paddlers without elite experience.

Top questions

What are Level III and IV rapids like on the Pastaza River?

Level III and IV rapids involve fast-moving water with waves, holes and obstacles that demand active paddling and quick responses to guide commands. The Pastaza's sections at this level are technical enough to keep experienced paddlers engaged and challenging enough to feel like real whitewater, but the guide controls the boat's line and makes the route decisions.

Do I need rafting experience to book this trip?

No experience is required. The guide gives a safety briefing and rowing instruction at the river before you launch, and the guide steers the boat and calls the commands during the rapids. You need a moderate level of physical fitness and the ability to follow instructions under pressure, but not prior rafting skill.

What happens during the 40-minute drive to the Pastaza River?

The private vehicle takes you through the Route of the Waterfalls, a scenic stretch near Baños where you can see multiple waterfalls from the road. It's a chance to see the landscape and settle in before the activity starts.

What food choices are available at lunch?

Lunch includes four options: chicken, meat, tilafish (a freshwater fish common in Ecuador), or vegetables. You choose when you arrive at the river.

What time does the day end?

The full activity runs 5.5 hours and finishes by 2:30 pm, when you return to Baños. The timing includes the drive, instruction, the rapids, and lunch.

What's included in the gear?

Helmet, life jacket, wetsuit, shoes, and all rowing equipment are provided. You also receive a photo CD of the day at the end.
