The experience
The day starts with a 45-minute drive from Baños toward Puyo, where you arrive at the put-in and receive a safety talk, paddling commands, rescue techniques and a walkthrough of the equipment. Then you're on the water for roughly 90 minutes of Class III+ and IV rapids, paddling through the landscape that sits between Sangay National Park and Llanganates National Park. The river corridor here is dense with vegetation and moves fast enough to demand focus and effort from every paddler.
Once you finish the rapids, the boat takes you back upriver and you change out of the wetsuit and helmet. A stop for lunch follows before the return drive to Baños. Photographs taken during the activity are included, so you have a record of the rapids and the paddling.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.
What's the difference between Class III+ and Class IV rapids, and which one will I spend more time on?
Class III+ rapids have larger waves and stronger currents than Class III, with some unavoidable splashing and the need for active paddling. Class IV rapids are steeper and more technical, with bigger drops and tighter maneuvering. The Pastaza here mixes both levels across the 90 minutes, so you'll encounter both types of whitewater in a single run.
How long am I actually paddling, and what happens before and after?
You paddle for approximately 90 minutes on the river itself. Before that, the 45-minute drive to Puyo includes a safety briefing and equipment check once you arrive. After you finish the rapids, the boat returns you upriver, you change clothes, and then you stop for lunch before heading back to Baños.
What gear do I need to bring, and what's provided?
The operator provides helmet, life jacket, wetsuit, paddle and slippers. Bring a change of clothes, a towel and any personal items you want to keep dry. The operator does not provide snacks or a water bottle, so pack those if you want them during the day.
Is this rafting trip suitable for someone who has never paddled before?
Yes, the guide leads you through paddling commands and techniques during the safety briefing, and the activity is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Children from age 12 are welcome. The guide is live and speaks English or Spanish, so you'll have instruction throughout.
What makes the Pastaza River different from other rafting in Ecuador?
The Pastaza cuts through an ecological corridor between two national parks (Sangay and Llanganates), so the vegetation and landscape are distinct from lower-altitude rivers. The Class III+ and IV rapids here demand active paddling and focus, making it a more technical run than beginner sections elsewhere.
