White Water Rafting Pastaza River Baños: Class III+ Rapids
Navigate Baños’ wild Pastaza River with a safety kayaker and captured memories
White water rafting on the Pastaza River in Baños puts you in control of a raft through Class III+ rapids in a tropical canyon. You meet at the agency at 9 am, get equipped and a safety briefing, then drive past three waterfalls to the put-in. After an hour of active paddling, you finish at Topo and return to Baños for lunch. A professional guide and safety kayaker stay with the group; all gear, transport by private van, photos and videos are included.
The Experience
The Pastaza River runs through a canyon outside Baños with warm water and clean banks—conditions that make it different from the cold, silted rapids you find in many mountain regions. You start at the agency at 9 am, where the guide fits you with a helmet, life jacket and paddle. The van ride to San Francisco Town takes you past Agoyan, Manto de la Novia and El Pailon del Diablo waterfalls, all visible from the road as you approach the river.
Before you get on the water, the guide runs a safety talk on land—paddle commands, how to brace yourself, what to do if someone goes overboard—and you practice the strokes on the ground first. Then you push off into the rapids. The hour on the river takes you through Class III+ water where you're paddling hard but the guide is reading the current and calling the moves. A safety kayaker stays with the group the whole time. When you pull out at Topo, the van is waiting to drive you back to Baños.
Lunch happens after the rafting, giving you time to dry off and change. The meal is included; if you need a vegetarian option, let the operator know when you book. The whole day runs about five hours from start to finish. Bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and sandals; the operator will send photos and videos from the run.
What’s included
- Professional guide and safety kayaker with the group.
- all rafting gear (helmet, life jacket, paddle).
- private van transport to and from the river.
- lunch after rafting.
- photos and videos from the day.

Is this one for you?You paddle the raft yourself with the guide calling commands—this is not a spectator trip. A minimum of five people per booking means you're sharing the experience with others, and the group stays small enough that the guide can watch everyone. Choose this if you want to be active on the water rather than watching from a boat, and if you're comfortable with a full day of physical effort in tropical heat.
