What makes Sosua's water so clear that you can see the coral from the boat?

You're picked up from your hotel, taken to Sosua Beach, and guided through two coral reef stops where you snorkel at your own pace. Lunch, drinks and a piña colada are served on the boat, then you have time to rest in a beach chair before heading back. The whole experience is handled — transport, gear, food, timing — so you show up and swim.

The Experience

The Bay of Sosua sits in a pocket of the Dominican coast where the water stays calm and transparent year-round — no waves, no silt, just visibility down to the reef. You get picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven to the beach, where a snorkeling guide hands you a mask, fins and life jacket, walks you through what to expect, and then you're in the boat heading out. The first stop is Three Rocks, three coral formations that rise from the seafloor and attract schools of fish. The second reef sits back toward the bay. You're in the water maybe forty minutes at each spot, moving at your own pace, with the guide nearby.

After snorkeling, the boat idles in the shallows while the crew sets out a spread: fried chicken and fish, rice, beans, a banana salad, chips. There's rum, local beer, a piña colada for everyone, bottled water and cola. You eat on the boat or wade back to shore — your choice. Then comes the part that surprises people: beach chairs are waiting. You can nap, float in the water, or just sit and watch the Atlantic. Groups of five to seven people travel on a glass-bottom boat or fast boat; groups of eight and up get a catamaran or yacht, so the boat matches the group size.

The whole day runs from morning into early afternoon. You bring your own towel and sunscreen — the sun here is direct and the water is warm enough that you don't feel it cooling you down. WiFi is available on board if you need to send a photo home, and the guide stays with you the whole time, so you're never figuring out the reef alone.

What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off in an air-conditioned vehicle, snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, life jacket), a snorkeling guide, entry to both reef sites, a Dominican-style lunch with fish and chicken, national drinks including rum and beer, a piña colada for each person, bottled water and cola, a beach chair for resting afterward, and WiFi on board.
