You're picked up from your hotel and driven to Bayahibe, where you board a catamaran for snorkeling at the coral reef wall, then sail to the natural pool sandbank for swimming and photos. Lunch is a gourmet buffet on Saona Island's exclusive beach with an open bar, hammocks and lounge chairs included; you return to your hotel by late afternoon.
The boat leaves Bayahibe at mid-morning, and the first thing you notice is how the crew already knows who's nervous about snorkeling and who's done it before. They hand out gear without fuss, point to the coral reef wall just offshore, and within minutes you're in water so clear you can see the sand thirty feet down. Colorful fish dart past — parrotfish, sergeant majors, things you'd need a guidebook to name — and the coral formations rise like underwater gardens. It's not a long stop, maybe thirty to forty minutes, but it's enough to remember why you came to the Caribbean in the first place.
After that, the catamaran heads toward the natural pool, and this is the part that feels almost unreal. You're standing in water up to your waist in the middle of the ocean, on a sandbank that shouldn't exist, with starfish scattered across the bottom like they're part of the scenery. The water is so shallow and so clear that you half-expect it to be cold, but it's warm, and the sky just keeps going. There's a thirty-minute window here, which sounds short until you're actually there and realize you don't need much longer — you just want to stand in it and let your brain catch up to where your body is.
Lunch happens on Saona Island itself, at a beach area that caps out at 300 visitors a day, which means it doesn't feel like you're eating shoulder-to-shoulder with a thousand other tourists. Tables are set up right by the water, and the food is straightforward Dominican — grilled fish, rice, plantains, the kind of meal that tastes better when you're barefoot and the Caribbean is ten feet away. The open bar runs all day: Barceló rum, Presidente beer, mojitos, Cuba Libres, soft drinks. You can grab a hammock or a lounge chair under the palms and just sit there, or you can wade back in. Some people book optional massages on the beach, which tells you something about the pace of the day.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, which means you don't have to figure out how to get from your resort to Bayahibe — the air-conditioned vehicle handles that. The whole thing runs about eight hours from start to finish. Snorkel gear is provided, so you don't need to pack your own, though if you have your own and prefer it, that's fine too.
