The Experience

Honestly, I didn’t expect to hear Biggie Smalls echoing out over the Caribbean, but that’s exactly how our Punta Cana hip hop party boat started — bass thumping, sun already blazing, and everyone kind of sizing each other up at first. The crew was all smiles, passing around cold drinks before we even left the pier (I went for rum punch, obviously). DJ started spinning some R&B with a bit of dancehall thrown in — not just background music but the real deal. I caught myself grinning when the guy next to me tried to freestyle in Spanish. Didn’t quite nail it but hey, points for effort.

We stopped for snorkeling somewhere past where the water turns that wild turquoise you see in postcards. The salt stung my lips but it felt good after dancing on deck. Our guide — I think his name was Miguel? — handed out masks and made sure nobody drifted too far. There were flashes of silver fish everywhere and a couple people tried to take underwater selfies (not sure how those turned out). Back on board, someone passed around slices of pineapple that tasted like actual sunshine. Music never really stopped — just shifted tempo as we cruised past Dolphin Island. It smelled like sunscreen and sea air and something sweet from the snack tray.

The sandbar was where things got loose — waist-deep water, drinks floating by in plastic cups, everyone laughing and splashing around. At one point there was a dance-off (I sat that out; no regrets), and then Miguel pulled out some game involving balancing fruit on your head while moving to Afrobeats. I still think about that view: blue everywhere, bodies moving in time with the music, nobody worrying about their phone signal or what time it was. On the way back we did farewell shots (tequila? I think so) and someone played “Juicy” again as if to bookend the whole thing.
