The experience
The tour starts at the Bayahibe office, the only departure port to Saona, with a short briefing before boarding the speedboat. From there, you cruise past El Peñón's limestone cliffs inside Cotubanamá National Park, where your guide explains the Taíno heritage and the rock formations' cultural weight. The speedboat gets you to the island faster than traditional sailing tours, so you spend less time in transit and more on the water and sand.
Your first water stop is Catuano, where you snorkel directly from the boat among colorful tropical fish and coral. Life vests are on hand, and swimmers of any level can join. Those who prefer to stay aboard can watch from the deck. After snorkeling, you arrive at a beach on Saona Island for a Dominican-style buffet (grilled fish or chicken, rice, salads and tropical fruit), served right on the sand. You have time to swim, rest under the palms, and soak in the Caribbean quiet before the boat moves on.
The afternoon takes you to Playa del Toro, a wilder, less-crowded stretch of Saona's coastline where you can walk the shore or swim in clear turquoise water. Then the boat winds through the mangrove channels of the national park. Your guide talks through their role as marine nurseries and coastal shields. The day ends at the Natural Pool, a shallow sandbank in open water where you wade waist-deep in crystal-clear shallows and watch large starfish in their habitat. Your guide shows you how to observe them without touching, and you get time to swim and photograph before heading back to Bayahibe.
