The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Punta Cana hotel and a drive to Santo Domingo. Before entering the city, you stop at Three Eyes National Park, where a local guide leads a 45-minute tour through three Taino caves and a fourth lake. These caves shaped Taino life, culture and religion for centuries, and the guide walks you through what each space meant to the people who lived here. After the caves, you head to the Malecón, the Caribbean boardwalk, where you can set up a hammock and watch the water while the breeze comes off the sea.

The afternoon centers on the Colonial Zone, where your guide takes you through eight stops across the oldest European settlement in the Americas. You walk Calle Las Damas, the first street ever built here, lined with colonial tiles and flanked by the Ozama Fortress, the children's museum in the house of Rodrigo de Bastidas, and colonial homes with their original shields still visible. You visit Columbus Park and the Alcázar de Colón, the palace built between 1511 and 1514 for Diego Columbus, Christopher's son, where an audio guide in your language walks you through the antiques inside. Lunch is included at a local restaurant in the zone.

The tour also takes you to the National Pantheon, the last major building the Spanish constructed on the island, and past the Presidential Palace and the Columbus Lighthouse.
