The Experience

We rolled out of Punta Cana just after sunrise, still half-awake as our minivan zipped past sugarcane fields and little roadside stands selling fruit I couldn’t name. By the time we reached Santo Domingo, the city was already humming. Our guide, Ana, kept tossing us little facts in both Spanish and English—she laughed when I tried to repeat “Parque Nacional Tres Ojos” with her accent. The air changed as we stepped down into the Three Eyes cenote—cooler, heavy with that mineral smell. Water so clear it looked fake. There was this moment where all you could hear was dripping water and someone’s shoes squeaking on rock. I didn’t expect to feel so small in there.

After that, we drove by the Columbus Lighthouse—Faro a Colón—which looks almost futuristic and ancient at the same time (Ana said it’s supposed to hold Columbus’s remains but she just shrugged). We only stopped for photos before heading past the Presidential Palace—white columns shining under this harsh Caribbean sun. It’s funny how official everything looks from behind a fence. Then came my favorite part: wandering through the Colonial Zone. Cobbled streets, old stone walls, people sitting on stoops fanning themselves or playing dominoes right out on Calle Las Damas. You can actually touch the stones that have been there for centuries—it’s wild.

Lunch was a buffet in some shaded courtyard off Calle El Conde; I piled my plate with rice and beans and something called “pollo guisado.” The waiter grinned when I asked for seconds (I’m not ashamed). Afterward we strolled along El Conde itself—music floating out of shops, kids chasing pigeons. The whole day felt like flipping through pages of a storybook but with sweat on your back and real voices all around you. I still think about that cool cave air sometimes when it gets too hot at home.
