The experience
You start at your hotel in Barahona, picked up in a safari-style truck with your guide and a nature interpreter. On the drive to the Philippines, a small mining community, you pass panoramic views and stop at the Larimar mine, where you can watch miners extract the blue semi-precious stone that only exists here and nowhere else on earth. After lunch at a pebble beach where the Los Patos River pools, you visit Villa Miriam, a private residence built in 1970 with a series of fed pools set into the landscape.
The river walk begins at the water's edge. As you move upstream, the pools deepen and the blue intensifies. Your guide points out the massive Javilla and Cabirma trees lining the banks, and you watch for the Chipita Candela bird and other wildlife. The walk ends at La Plaza spa, where the pools are coldest and clearest. You swim in the waterfalls here, and the more adventurous can explore the mouth of the Cañada de Deguindadero canyon. The truck returns you to your hotel at the end.
The tour is built around a river, not a schedule, so the pace follows the water. Your guide speaks your language and knows the history and ecology of every stop. Soda, bottled water and snacks are included. You bring swimwear and a towel. The walk demands moderate fitness (not extreme, but steady), and the terrain is natural, so wear shoes with grip.

What is the Larimar mine and why does it matter that it's in the Philippines?
Larimar is a blue semi-precious stone found only in the Philippines, a small community in the Dominican Republic, and nowhere else in the world. The mine is an active working site where you can watch miners extract it by hand and join in the search if you want.
