The tour runs 4 hours total on the river, includes round-trip transport from Puerto Plata and a Dominican lunch afterward, and operates with a live guide in English, Spanish, Italian, French and other languages. Children from age 1 are welcome, though the activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or cardiovascular concerns.

Step-by-step itinerary
Hike and explore Damajagua Falls
- Travel through Puerto Plata city
- Hike through dense forest
- Cross bridges and observe flora
- Reach top of rocky hill
- Descend by jumping or sliding waterfalls
- Enjoy authentic Dominican lunch
The experience
Damajagua Falls sits about 30 minutes' hike into dense forest from Puerto Plata, and the real action starts once you reach the top. The descent is what makes this different from a standard waterfall tour: instead of walking down a trail, you jump into pools (up to 8 meters or 25 feet), slide down natural rock channels and swim between cascades. The biggest jumps all have hiking alternatives, so you choose your own level of intensity as you move through the water. Total time in the river is roughly 2 hours.
The hike in crosses bridges and passes through forest thick enough that you'll spot local flora and fauna on the way. Once you're done with the water, you head back to base camp, where an authentic Dominican lunch waits before the return drive to Puerto Plata. The whole outing takes 4 hours from start to finish. Depending on the season, the falls system shows either 27 or 12 cascades, so the scale shifts slightly year to year.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of several other languages, and the tour is built to work for families: children from age 1 can come along, though they'll experience the activity differently depending on their age and comfort in water. The transport is round-trip from Puerto Plata, so there's no arranging a separate ride.
