The experience
The day starts with pickup from your accommodation in Barahona. A nature interpreter guide meets you and explains the trail and safety measures before you head out. The route takes you first to the Philippines, a small community where miners extract Larimar, a blue semi-precious stone found nowhere else in the world. You can watch the extraction process and join the search if you want. From there you drive along Playa Los Platos, a pebble beach popular with surfers where the Los Patos River forms a large natural pool, then visit Villa Miriam, a private 1970s estate with fed pools set in the hills above the coast.
Before reaching the river trail itself, you stop at La Hortaliza, a dam where locals swim in fresh water, and walk through a coffee nursery to see the plants before they become the finished drink. Then the walk along the river begins. You move upstream, watching for birds like the Cigua Canaria and Julián Chiví, and spotting amphibians and crustaceans among the Javilla and Cabirma trees. The pools grow bluer and deeper as you go. At La Garganta del Infierno you reach the cave itself: a natural amphitheater of rock and cold clear water where you can swim in the waterfalls. The more adventurous can explore the mouth of the Cañada de Deguindadero. After the swim, you're offered a natural juice and a lunch prepared on-site, eaten in the natural setting. The return walk takes you back downriver to where the vehicles wait.
Transportation is handled throughout: a safari-type truck moves the group between sites, and your guide is a local expert who knows the history and ecology of the region in depth. Bottled water, a lifejacket and lunch are all included. The operator carries medical insurance and maintains modern vehicles with strict safety measures in place.
