The experience
The tour starts with a climb up the old mountain road to Norðadalsskarð, a vantage point photographers favor for its panoramic reach across the islands. From there you head to Saksun, a village tucked about ten minutes off the main road and ringed by a mountain amphitheatre. The lagoon called Pollurin sits in front of it, and the turf roofs are the detail locals point to when they describe the place. The drive to Tjørnuvík takes around half an hour and passes through high mountain valleys. Tjørnuvík sits on a black sand beach that draws cold-water surfers, and from the shore you can see two sea stacks (The Giant and the Witch) that legend says once tried to drag the islands toward Iceland. Locals there sometimes sell coffee and waffles on site.
The route then passes Fossá, the highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands, before climbing past Slættaratindur, which rises 880 metres and is the country's tallest mountain. You finish at Gjógv, a village named for the deep gorge that cuts through it. Lunch happens here, and there's time to walk the village at your own pace. A short optional path leads to a viewpoint slightly above the settlement. The path itself was restored through the Faroes' Voluntourism programme, a community project that has rebuilt trails and maintained the landscape.
Your guide speaks English, Norwegian or Danish and handles all driving. The tour avoids peak hours at the popular stops, so you move through each village without the crush of tour buses. Public transportation options exist nearby if you prefer not to arrange a car beforehand.
