The experience
The day starts with an 08:45 ferry from Tórshavn that takes two hours to reach Tvøroyri, passing Nólsoy, Sandoy and Skúvoy on the way. Once on Suðuroy, a guide takes you through most of the island's villages by minibus, stopping to walk up to the summit of Hvannhagi for views across the landscape, then to the cliff-top viewpoint and the lighthouse at the southernmost point of the Faroe Islands. The route traces the end of the Faroese saga (the guide explains the historical events that unfolded here), and passes through the fishing village of Hvalba with its waterfall and church, where the original Faroese flag hangs.
Lunch happens in Tvøroyri at Cafe MorMor, a retro spot where you'll have time to sit and eat before the afternoon leg. After lunch, the tour moves to Hvalba's coal mines, which operated from the 1770s onward. The guide also tells the story of three pirate ships that landed and ravaged the village centuries ago. You'll return to the ferry in time for the journey back to Tórshavn, arriving in the evening.
The guide speaks English or Danish and is included in the price. Children from age 2 are welcome, and the tour suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Pickup from your hotel in Tórshavn is included.
