The Experience

The bus leaves from Stromma Ticket Office and you're on your own schedule from there. Pick a ticket valid for 24, 48, or 72 hours — the clock starts when you board — and hop on and off at whichever stops matter to you that day. The Classic Copenhagen red route hits Nyhavn's painted townhouses and the entrance to Tivoli Gardens; the green route heads out toward the Carlsberg brewery side of the city; the purple one covers the Colorful Copenhagen stretch. You get headphones with your ticket, so the audio guide plays as the bus moves, feeding you facts and stories about what's passing outside the window instead of you having to read a map or ask someone.

Nyhavn is usually the first place people get off — the harbor's loud and crowded and photogenic, and you can spend twenty minutes or two hours there depending on whether you just want the picture or you want to sit at one of the waterfront restaurants. From there, most people either stay on for Tivoli Gardens (the entrance is a few stops down) or jump off earlier to walk toward Amalienborg Palace or Rosenborg Castle. The Little Mermaid statue is on the route too, though it's smaller than people expect and the stop is quick. Freetown Christiania is further out — it's a self-governing neighborhood that's been there since the 1970s, and the vibe is completely different from the rest of the city, so if you're curious about that side of Copenhagen, you'd hop off there and spend an hour or more walking around.

The bus itself is open-air on top, which means you'll feel the weather — Copenhagen in summer is fine, but if it rains or it's cold, you're sitting under it. The route covers Copenhagen Zoo and the Tycho Brahe Planetarium too, though those are stops you'd only get off at if you had a specific reason. Most people use the hop-on-hop-off format to see the main sights without renting a car or figuring out the metro, and the 48-hour ticket is the sweet spot for that — it gives you enough time to do the red route properly, maybe catch part of the green one, and not feel rushed.

Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and if you're in a wheelchair and can transfer to a regular bus seat, you can join — just know you won't stay in the wheelchair while the bus is moving. Service animals are allowed. The stops are spread across the city, so you're never more than a short walk from public transport if you need it between hops.
