The Experience
We slid into the old convertible right outside our hotel — honestly, I felt a little self-conscious at first (it’s not every day you ride through Prague in a shiny vintage car). The driver, Pavel, grinned and handed us a light blanket for the breeze. We set off down cobbled streets, the engine humming and that faint scent of petrol mixing with roasted coffee from a nearby café. I kept catching people’s smiles as we passed; it felt like being part of the city’s scenery for once, not just watching it.
Pavel pointed out details I’d never have noticed on foot — little angels above doorways in Lesser Quarter, the way the gold on the National Theatre roof catches late afternoon sun. At Charles Bridge he slowed so we could take photos; someone waved at us from a tram and I waved back without thinking. There was this moment near Old Town Square when he stopped talking and let us listen to the bells from the Astronomical Clock. It echoed over the square, kind of haunting — I didn’t expect to feel moved by a clock, but there you go.
We covered so much ground in just an hour: Wenceslas Square with its statue (Pavel told us a story about St. Wenceslas that made me laugh), Petrin Tower poking up in the distance, even zipped past the Dancing House — which is stranger up close than in pictures. He knew all these shortcuts; sometimes we’d turn suddenly and end up somewhere quieter, like Loreto Sanctuary where you could actually hear birds instead of traffic. The whole thing felt easy and relaxed — no rushing or awkward silences, just stories layered over city sounds.
I still think about how different Prague looked from that low seat — everything closer and more alive somehow. By the time we pulled up back at our hotel, my hair was a mess and my cheeks hurt from grinning. If you’re after something quick but packed with character (and don’t mind a few stares), this old timer sightseeing tour is worth it.
