The Experience

Someone hands me a glass — I think it was a smoky IPA, but honestly, after staring at the wall of 400 beer bottles at our first stop in Letná, I just pointed and hoped for the best. Our guide, Petr, grinned and told us how this part of Prague used to be all factories and artists squatting in old buildings. He knew everyone behind the bar by name. The place smelled like hops and old wood, and there was that hum you get when people are settling in for a long night.

The tram ride was quick — maybe ten minutes? — but enough for Petr to point out some graffiti I’d have missed otherwise. Next thing I know we’re in this darts bar where locals actually cheer when you hit the board (I didn’t). There was laughter and someone tried to teach me how to say “bullseye” in Czech. I butchered it, which got a bigger laugh than my throw. Then burgers: proper ones, messy and juicy with hand-cut fries. They had vegan stuff too, which surprised me — Prague isn’t all pork knuckles after all.

I liked how we just wandered between places, no rush. At one point we passed through Letná Field; Petr stopped us by this weird empty plinth where Stalin’s statue used to stand (he told us about protests here during the Velvet Revolution — heavy stuff). Somewhere nearby there was an outdoor party starting up — bass thumping under the trees, kids dancing on the grass. It felt like the city was letting its hair down for us.

The last club looked like something out of Mad Max — all welded metal and flickering lights. Inside it was hot and loud but weirdly friendly; DJs switching every hour so you never got bored. I lost track of time completely. When we finally left (they called us a taxi home), my jacket smelled like smoke and fried onions and something sweet I still can’t place. Honestly? I didn’t expect to feel so at home in a city where I barely speak the language.
