The Experience

Bells from the Astronomical Clock echoed somewhere behind us as we met our guide, Petra, right by Kafka’s old house. I remember the smell of cinnamon drifting from a nearby stall before I even saw the first market lights. It wasn’t too cold that afternoon—just enough for your breath to show and make holding a cup of hot wine feel like a small luxury. Petra waved us over and handed out metro tickets with a grin (“You’ll need these later, trust me!”). There were already kids darting around the Old Town Square, their cheeks red from the wind.

The first stop was the big market at Old Town Square—honestly, it looked straight out of a storybook but felt lived-in, not staged. We tried these little crescent-shaped cookies (vanilkové rohlíčky? I probably said it wrong), all crumbly and sweet with powdered sugar sticking to my gloves. Petra explained how Czechs don’t do Santa—apparently it’s Baby Jesus who brings gifts here.
