The Experience

I’ll be honest, I thought I knew what Czech beer was about—until this tour. We met our guide, Petra, under the horse’s tail at Wenceslas Square (apparently that’s a classic Prague meeting spot—who knew?). She led us down side streets where the city felt less postcard-perfect and more lived-in. The first pub smelled like old wood and something warm baking. Locals were already deep into their pints by 5pm, laughing in that low-key way that makes you want to join in.

Petra kept ordering beers I’d never even heard of—a dark lager that tasted almost chocolatey, then something hoppy and light. She explained how Czechs pour their pivo with this thick foam on top (“mlíko,” she called it), which I definitely spilled a bit trying to copy. The Czech tapas came out family-style: pickled cheese (stronger than I expected), little sausages with mustard, fried bread. Honestly, I still think about that garlic smell clinging to my fingers after the second round.

We wandered through Žižkov later—saw the weird TV tower with those crawling baby statues (I had to ask Petra if they were a joke; apparently not). At one point we squeezed into a bar where the bartender barely glanced up but poured us something brewed just for that place. It was loud and a little chaotic, but somehow cozy too. Petra taught us “Na zdraví!” for cheers—I probably butchered it but nobody seemed to mind.
