The Experience

“You can’t really know Cyprus until you taste the sea,” our driver Andreas said as we left Pafos behind. He had this habit of humming softly when the road curved along the coast — I caught myself listening more to him than to my own playlist. The bus was cool inside, but every time someone opened a window you’d get this rush of hot pine and something salty. I didn’t expect the banana plantations to look so green against all that dry hillside — it’s just one of those things you notice when you’re not looking for it.

The boat ride from Latchi out to the Blue Lagoon was louder than I thought it would be — kids shrieking about the water slide, older couples chatting in Greek over plastic cups of wine. Our guide Maria pointed out Aphrodite’s Bath tucked into the rocks (“Legend says she still comes here at sunset,” she grinned). When we finally stopped, I jumped straight in — honestly, I’m not much of a swimmer but that water was too clear not to try. There was fruit and cold drinks on deck, which tasted way better after a swim. I still think about how sun-warmed my skin felt lying on that slippery boat bench.

We stopped for photos at the Edro 3 shipwreck near Peyia — it’s just there, rusting away in shallow water like some kind of movie set. Maria told us stories about storms and smugglers; half of us probably believed her, half didn’t care because we were busy trying to get a selfie with the wreck in the background. Lunch wasn’t included but we ended up at this taverna overlooking boats drifting past — grilled fish, chips, nothing fancy but somehow perfect after all that swimming. The view is what sticks with me most: blue on blue on blue.
