A 2-hour kiteboarding introduction course at St. Joris Bay in Curaçao teaches you to handle the kite, steer it and propel yourself on wind power alone. You'll start with a safety briefing and kite setup on land, then move into shallow water with an instructor to learn the fundamentals. Before and after your lesson, you can watch local kiteboarders practice in the same bay.

The experience

The lesson starts on land with kite setup and a wind and safety briefing, so you understand the machine before you touch the water. St. Joris Bay is the A-spot for kiteboarding on Curaçao's mainland, and the water there runs both shallow and deep: shallow enough to practice the basics without fear, deep enough to progress as you improve. Your instructor stays with you the whole time, teaching you to steer the kite and use wind power to move across the water.

Kiteboarding feels like learning to drive a car: after a couple of lessons, the motions click and you control your speed and height. The course provides this year's kite gear, rash guards and water shoes, so you show up in swimwear and sunscreen. An intercom radio keeps you connected to your instructor throughout. The bay fills with local kiteboarders, so you'll see what's possible once you've got the basics down.

The guide speaks English or Dutch and works with children from age 8 onward. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness and the ability to swim. The water and the wind demand respect, but the shallow bay and the instructor's focus on technique and safety mean you're never alone or unsupported.
