What’s included

Your day includes private hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle, use of all SCUBA equipment (no need to bring your own), bottled water and snacks between dives, plus all fees and taxes covered before you’re dropped back at your accommodation after exploring Curaçao’s reefs together.

"You see that blue tang? Locals call it 'dokter vis'," our divemaster, Jeroen, said as we shuffled into the water just off Westpunt. I’d never heard a fish called a doctor before, but there he was, pointing out flashes of cobalt darting between coral fingers. The sun was already high—Curaçao doesn’t really do chilly mornings—and the air smelled faintly salty and sweet, like sunscreen mixed with seaweed. I fumbled with my mask strap (still can’t get it right on the first try), but nobody rushed me. Jeroen just grinned and waited.

The best part about this 2-tank guided experience in Curaçao is how unhurried everything feels. We didn’t have to lug gear anywhere—they picked us up at our apartment in an air-conditioned van, bottles of cold water ready, and all the equipment sorted for us. I liked that our group was only three divers plus Jeroen. Underwater, he pointed out a tiny seahorse clinging to some fan coral—I almost missed it because I was distracted by a school of silvery fish flickering past my elbow. There’s something about breathing slow and hearing nothing but your own bubbles that makes you forget time exists.

Between dives we sat on the rocks eating snacks (I still don’t know what those little coconut things were called—delicious though) while Jeroen told us how some of these reefs survived storms over the years. He even tried teaching me how to say “parrotfish” in Papiamentu; I probably butchered it because he laughed and shook his head. The second dive felt easier somehow, maybe because I wasn’t overthinking my buoyancy anymore or maybe just because Curaçao’s underwater world is so quietly absorbing you forget to worry about anything else.

I keep thinking about that moment when light filtered down through the water and everything glowed greenish-gold for a minute. It’s not something you can really photograph—just one of those memories you carry home in your head, salty hair and all.
