The Experience

I’ll admit, I was nervous when the van pulled up outside my guesthouse in Willemstad — wetsuit nerves, maybe. But our instructor, Jeroen, just grinned and handed me a bottle of cold water like we’d known each other for ages. The drive to the dive spot was short, maybe 15 minutes? I lost track because he kept pointing out weird little facts about the island (like why some houses are blue — apparently it’s not just for Instagram). The air smelled salty and warm even before we reached the bay.

Setting up on the sand felt almost too casual for something as big as my first scuba dive. Jeroen went through every bit of gear patiently — even let me fumble with the mask straps twice without making a big deal out of it. There was another couple from Germany there too; one of them kept laughing nervously, which made me feel better about my own shaky hands. We practiced breathing underwater right at the edge where tiny fish darted around our feet. It’s strange how quiet everything gets once your head goes under — like someone turned down the world.

When we finally swam out to the reef, I remember brushing against soft coral (not supposed to touch, but it happens) and seeing this electric blue fish zip past my face. Jeroen pointed at something behind a rock — later he said it was a juvenile angelfish but honestly I was too busy trying not to float away. Afterward on shore, we sat in the shade eating snacks and swapping stories about what we’d seen. My hair still smelled like saltwater hours later and I kind of loved that.
