The Experience

The first thing I saw at Zeljava Airbase was this battered old Douglas C-47 Dakota, just sitting there with its wings stretched out like it was waiting for us. Our guide—can’t remember if his name was Marko or Mario, but he had that dry Croatian humor—waved us up onto the wing. I’m not usually one for climbing on things (especially before coffee), but he insisted. Inside, the smell of old metal and dust hit me right away, and you could almost picture the crew squeezing past each other in here.
