The Experience

"How high do you want to jump?" Our guide asked that question before we even got in the boat, and it stuck with me the whole way down. The Mreznica River sits tucked between Rastoke Village and Plitvice Lakes, in a conservation area most tourists never find—a dense forest canyon with cliffs on both sides, emerald water, and nine waterfalls waiting. You paddle a tandem inflatable boat, which means you're not fighting the current alone, and the guide handles the route while you focus on the river itself. The water is clean enough to drink straight from the source, which is only 12 kilometers upstream, and you can feel the difference the moment you're on it.

The kayaking part takes maybe an hour to learn and settle into—they give you paddling instruction and safety briefing on shore before you launch. Then comes the part that makes this different from a standard river float: you pass under or over nine of the ten waterfalls, and at each one you get to choose. Jump from 1 meter, 3 meters, 5 meters, or 8 meters if you're feeling it. Swim behind the cascade itself. Glide straight under the falling water. Or just paddle through and keep moving. The guide reads the group and the water level and decides which ones are safe that day, so it's not reckless—it's managed risk, which is the only kind worth taking. Between the jumps there are gentle rapids, pools where the water sits still and dark, and stretches where you're just floating through a canyon that feels untouched.

Everything is included: the tandem boat, life jacket, helmet, neoprene wetsuit and water shoes, a waterproof jacket, a dry barrel for your phone, paddles, and the guide who knows every meter of the river. There's a terrace and changing rooms at the start, a local bar if you want something after, and they shuttle you back to where you parked. The whole thing is maybe three to four hours from arrival to leaving, which is short enough that you're not exhausted but long enough that you've actually been somewhere. Insurance is built in, and the gear is sized for adults and kids, so families do this regularly.
