The Experience

“So you’ve never tried stand up paddleboarding before?” our guide Luka grinned as he handed me the board at Stobreč Camp. I just shrugged — honestly, I was more worried about falling in than looking cool. The early morning felt almost too quiet, except for someone sweeping outside a bakery nearby (the smell of bread hit me right then). We pushed off into the Adriatic and it was just us, a few fishing boats bobbing around, and this weird sense of floating between city life and total silence.

After maybe twenty minutes paddling (my arms already complaining), Luka pointed out where the river Žrnovnica meets the sea. The water changed color — suddenly it was greenish and colder on my feet. Birds darted over reeds; somewhere behind us, a dog barked once and then nothing. We followed the river under Mosor Mountain’s shadow and I swear everything felt softer there — light, sounds, even the air. I didn’t expect that shift at all.

On the way back out to sea, Luka steered us toward these chalky white rocks where old stone houses clung above. He told us locals used to dive for Periska shells here — protected now — and then tossed me a snorkel mask. I tried it but mostly just floated around watching tiny fish flicker away from my hands. Someone from our group actually jumped off a low cliff (not me), which got a laugh out of Luka: “Next time!” he shouted. My shoulders were sore but I kind of didn’t want it to end yet.
