Cetina River Canyoning from Split: Rope down the Great Gubavica
Rappel down a towering waterfall into the Cetina River canyon.
Extreme canyoning on Cetina River from Split is a six-hour activity combining hiking, swimming and rope descent of the Great Gubavica, Dalmatia's highest waterfall. A local guide leads small groups through the canyon daily from Split city center, with minivan transport included on the standard option. Minimum age is 15 and moderate physical fitness is required; the activity is not suitable for pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns.
The Experience
The day starts in Split city center, where you board an air-conditioned minivan for the drive to the Cetina River canyon trailhead. Once there, the guide outfits you and leads the group into the river itself—no observation deck, no walking trails above the water. You move through the canyon on foot and by swimming, passing under waterfalls and through deep green pools, the water temperature cool year-round. The canyon narrows as you progress, and the guide points out the route ahead.
The centerpiece is the Great Gubavica, a 55-meter waterfall—the highest in Dalmatia. The guide sets up a rope system and walks you through the descent. You're lowered down the face of the waterfall itself, water streaming around you, until you reach the pool below. It takes nerve and a moderate level of fitness, but the guide controls the pace and the rope. After the rappel, there's time to float in the pools and let the adrenaline settle before the hike back out.
Transport back to Split is included on the standard booking option. The alternative option covers the activity and guide only, leaving you to arrange your own way to and from the trailhead. Either way, the guide speaks English and stays with the group throughout. Bring a change of clothes and a towel; food and drinks are not provided, so pack what you'll need for the afternoon.
What’s included
- Local English-speaking guide.
- professional guide and tour escort.

Is this one for you?Book this if you want the full canyon experience—swimming, hiking and rappelling—rather than a gentler river float. The rope descent of the Great Gubavica is the centerpiece, and it demands moderate fitness and comfort in water; if you're looking for a less intense river activity, a gentler float-and-swim option would suit you better. The minivan transport from Split saves the logistics of reaching the trailhead yourself, though you can skip it and arrange your own ride if you prefer.
