The Experience

The tour starts in Varoš, one of Split's oldest quarters, and moves through the labyrinth of stone streets that make up the city center. You'll ride past the Riva promenade and the green market, then along the edges of Diocletian's Palace — the 1,700-year-old seat of the last emperor of unified Rome. The palace still stands largely intact, and the guide points out which sections are original and which details you might recognize from Game of Thrones filming. From there, the route heads toward Poljud Stadium, home of the local football club Hajduk Split.

The ride then climbs into Marjan Park, a forest in the middle of the city where the noise of the streets falls away. As you pedal under the trees, you pass small beaches, old churches and stone-covered caves. The ascent takes you past Saint Jerome church and a hermit cave, and as the elevation gains, views of the islands open up across the Adriatic. The physical effort of the climb is real — you need at least moderate fitness — but the shade and the pace give you time to take it in.

Matejuška pier is the stop where locals gather for drinks, conversation and sometimes impromptu concerts, and it's where you get the view of the old town and palace that feels lived-in rather than staged. From there, the route winds back through the city.
