The Meerene You Saw on Screen Is Actually a 1,700-Year-Old Roman Palace

You walk the exact streets and cellars of Diocletian's Palace where Game of Thrones filmed Meerene's most memorable scenes — the ambush, the entrances, the key deaths. Your guide connects the show locations to Split's real 1,700-year history, so you understand why the palace worked as a set and what it actually is. Entry to the cellars and professional photos are included, and the whole thing takes two to three hours.

1h–2h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Visit Diocletian's Palace streets
  • Explore palace substructure filming locations
  • See spots from Meeren seasons 4 and 5
  • Learn about Split's complex history

The Experience

What if the most recognizable set from Game of Thrones was never built at all? The crew didn't construct Meerene — they found it already standing in Split, Croatia, in the substructure and streets of Diocletian's Palace. You walk the same stone corridors where the show's cameras rolled, past the spot where one of Meerene's masters was killed, where Missandei posed for her own story, where Daario Naharie entered the city. The Sons of the Harpy ambushed the Unsulied here too, in a scene that still sticks with people who watched it.

But the tour doesn't stop at the show. Your guide moves through the palace and its cellars, pointing out how Split's actual history — Roman emperors, medieval kingdoms, Ottoman occupation, Yugoslav wars — is messier and more layered than anything Westeros invented. Diocletian built this palace around 300 AD as his retirement home, and the city grew inside and around it. You see the Peristyle Square, the heart of it all, where light falls the same way it did on camera. The cellar tickets are included, so you descend into the substructure where the temperature drops and the stone gets older. It's the kind of place where you understand why a production designer would choose it — it already looks like a set.

The tour runs about two to three hours and stays compact enough that strollers and people of all fitness levels can manage it. Photos happen at each stop, so you leave with images of yourself in the actual locations, not just the ones from the credits. Small groups mean your guide can answer questions about both the show and the city without rushing through either one.
