The experience

You arrive at Peristyle Square, the central courtyard of Diocletian's Palace where almost every passage inside the palace begins. From here the guide moves you through the vestibule where the emperor himself once stood, and you'll learn its history: sometimes traditional Dalmatian singing happens in this space. Then you descend into the substructures, the underground chambers that held the palace's weight and its supplies. The guide explains how they were built and what they held across the centuries, and you can return after the tour to explore the museum section on your own.

The route takes you to the main palace entrance, where you see the statue of Gregory of Nin and learn why he mattered to Croatian language and identity. A bronze model of the palace sits nearby, and from there the guide shows you the Riva promenade: the waterfront that became Split's public face. You pass through Fruit Square to see the 15th-century Venetian citadel and hear about Marko Marulić, who founded Croatian literature. The tour ends at the 16th-century Synagogue, where you learn about the Jewish community's place in Split's history.
