The experience
The first thing I noticed was the sound of cicadas (loud, almost electric) just as we met our guide by that round metal fountain in Plokata square. She handed out helmets and checked our bikes, making sure everyone looked comfortable (I was sweating already, but she said that’s normal for June). The mountain bikes felt solid, which was good because the route out of town turned bumpy fast: stone walls on both sides, little glimpses of blue sea between olive trees. I remember thinking: this is harder than my usual Sunday ride, but the views kept me moving.
We stopped more than once to catch our breath (thankfully), and our guide told us how Lumbarda’s vineyards have been here for centuries: her uncle still picks grapes for one of the wineries. There was a moment when she pointed out a patch of Grk vines, saying it only grows right here. I tried to pronounce “Grk” and she laughed: apparently I made it sound like a sneeze. The air smelled like wild herbs and dust. My shirt stuck to my back. But then you’d get this breeze from the sea and suddenly it felt possible again.
Rolling into Lumbarda felt like arriving somewhere secret. Both wineries were small, family places. You could hear people chatting in Croatian behind the kitchen doors. The first pour was cold Grk (so dry it almost tingled), then Posip at the next stop. They brought out plates with cheese and cured meats, plus olive oil so green it looked fake (it wasn’t). We sat under grapevines while someone’s grandma waved from her garden next door. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so welcome, or so full after just “tastings.”
I’m glad they drove us back to town because pedaling after all that wine would’ve been… ambitious. The sun was low by then. Everything golden, quiet except for a few birds. I still think about that last glass of Grk: the taste stuck with me longer than I thought it would.
