The experience
Three hours starts with a walk through the vineyard and olive and almond groves on the family estate in the Kaštela hills, where you learn how grapes and olives move from harvest to wine and oil. The owner leads the tour in traditional Dalmatian dress, and the views open onto the Adriatic. You descend into the wine cellar to taste seven homemade liquors, then move to the tasting room where Dalmatian delicacies (prosciutto, aged cheese, peka bread, sardines, olives, filled bell peppers, dried figs, sugarcoated almonds and orange peels) arrive with generous pours of estate wine and olive oil. Live accordion music plays while you eat.
The hands-on part comes next: you fill a bottle straight from the fermentation tanks, cork it, and label it yourself to carry home. On the return to the pickup point, the route stops at St. Martha's Church, a seventh-century structure and the birthplace of Croatian history. Guides speak English, French, German or Croatian depending on the group.

Is this one for you?The pickup and return are arranged from your hotel or meeting point, so you don't need a car to reach the Kaštela hills estate. Groups stay small and the owner leads the experience, which suits travelers seeking an unrushed, hands-on introduction to Dalmatian wine and farming rather than a quick stop.
