The experience

The tour runs between two and eight hours depending on how long you stay in the pools and whether you add a massage. You walk through the rainforest with a bilingual guide to five hypo-thermal pools fed by volcanic mineral water: heated by magma beneath Rincon de la Vieja and rich in calcium, sodium, magnesium and sulphur. The water is warm enough to soak in comfortably, and the walk itself is moderate: about one mile total, with free hiking sticks available if the terrain feels steep. Along the way you'll pass an observation platform where the volcano comes into view.

Lunch happens at 2pm in La Casona, and what you eat depends on which tour you book. The Spa Luxury option includes a special spa menu with wine and a snack platter. The Jaguar Luxury option brings champagne per couple and a chef-designed menu that can be served poolside if you prefer. Both tours come with fruit snacks at the pools and access to two of the waterfalls. A body massage in the pool is available on the Spa tour if you book at least four days ahead. You can arrange hotel pickup and drop-off, or drive yourself and meet the guide at the property.

Children are welcome from age five. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with cardiovascular concerns. Moderate fitness helps with the walking and pool entry. All entrance fees, taxes and the guide are included in the price.
