The Experience

Hands sticky from a chunk of guanábana, I was still chewing when our driver, Carlos, pointed out the fruit stand’s owner slicing open something that looked like a spiky football. We’d only just left San Jose an hour before, but already it felt like we were somewhere else — the air sweeter, the chatter in Spanish and English mixing as everyone tried samples. I’d never tasted half these fruits before. My friend tried to ask for “mamey” in her best accent; the vendor just grinned and handed her two.

The next stop was Caldera — Carlos slowed down so we could spot white-faced capuchin monkeys darting around. They’re fast (and loud), one even tossed a seed at us from above. I didn’t expect to get that close; you could hear their little hands rustling through palm leaves right over your head. The road up to Monteverde twisted higher after that, clouds drifting through the windows whenever we stopped at lookouts. The Nicoya Gulf shimmered way off in the distance — hard to believe it was real.

Lunch near Santa Elena was simple but good — rice, beans, some kind of chicken stew, and fresh juice that tasted like mango and something else I still can’t name. Our guide (María) told us about the cloud forest’s layers while we ate, drawing squiggly lines on a napkin. She’d grown up nearby and seemed to know every bird call by heart. When we finally reached Selvatura Park for the hanging bridges hike, everything felt damp and alive: moss underfoot, mist clinging to my jacket, birds calling somewhere deep in the green. I kept hoping for a glimpse of a quetzal but only spotted an emerald toucanet — still bright enough to make me stop walking for a minute.

The walk itself wasn’t too hard — mostly flat with some gentle climbs. There’s this moment halfway across one of the bridges where all you hear is wind moving through leaves below you and your own breath. I remember gripping the rail because it swayed just enough to remind me how high up we were. On the drive back toward San Jose (or if you want, they’ll drop you at your hotel in Monteverde), everyone was quieter than before — maybe tired or maybe just thinking about all that green fading behind us.
