The experience

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is not a rain forest: the elevation and constant mist create something different. At 4,724 feet above sea level, the air stays cool and wet year-round, which shapes everything that grows here and everything that lives in it. Your naturalist guide walks you on maintained trails through this ecosystem and explains why the reserve matters: 2.5% of the world's biodiversity lives in these 3,500 hectares, making it one of the most important private reserves in Costa Rica. The guide carries binoculars and a telescope so you can see birds and other wildlife up close. Some of the best bird-watching in Costa Rica happens both inside and outside the reserve boundaries.

The tour runs three hours and includes hotel pickup and dropoff from Monteverde or Santa Elena. You choose between the Essence Trail and the Heart of the Forest Trail when you book: both follow the same well-maintained paths and both come with the same guide and equipment. The reserve was founded in 1972 specifically for conservation, so the trails are designed to protect the forest while letting you move through it. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and teaches you about the microclimate that makes this place work: how the mist feeds the plants, why certain species live here and nowhere else, what the reserve's research has discovered.
