The Experience

“If you fall in, just float on your back and look up at the sky,” our guide Marco grinned as he handed me a paddle. I tried to look brave but my hands were already damp — not sure if it was nerves or the sticky morning air in La Fortuna. We’d barely left the hotel when the van windows fogged up, and by the time we reached Balsa River, I could hear the water before I saw it — a low, steady roar mixed with birds calling from somewhere deep in the green. Everyone’s hair was wild from helmets and river spray but nobody cared much anymore.
