You paddle 15 kilometers of Class III and IV rapids, not just watch them pass.

Upper Balsa River white water rafting near La Fortuna is a Class III/IV paddling adventure on the Balsa River with a live guide, hotel pickup, all equipment, and a Costa Rican lunch included. The trip runs 5 hours total, departing daily at 9am and returning by 1:30pm. Minimum age is 12; travelers should be in good physical condition. Vegetarian lunch options are available if requested at booking.

The Experience

You paddle a 15-kilometer stretch of Class III and IV rapids on the upper Balsa River, the most challenging white water in the northern area of Costa Rica. The day starts with pickup from your La Fortuna hotel (hotels within 6 kilometers of the office; extra pickups beyond that distance are available for an additional charge). You meet your guide and get fitted with a helmet and life jacket, then launch into the river where the current and the rocks do most of the talking. The rapids are real — this is not a scenic float — and you're the one making the paddle work.

The run includes two rest stops where you can swim in calmer sections and eat fresh Costa Rican fruit straight from the river. After you finish the rapids, the guide takes you to a local restaurant for a casado — rice, beans, plantains, salad, tortilla, and your choice of protein — and you're back in La Fortuna town by 1:30pm. You get a clean towel and a water bottle for the ride, and the operator handles all transportation and equipment. The trip runs in all weather, so bring clothes that can get wet and dry quickly.

This is built for people in good physical condition who want to do the paddling themselves, not ride along. The minimum age is 12, and the operator notes it's not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. If you need a vegetarian meal, let them know when you book.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and round-trip transportation from La Fortuna.
  • all rafting equipment and a live guide in English or Spanish.
  • fresh fruit during the river stops.
  • a clean towel and bottled water.
  • a Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant.

Top questions

What does Class III and IV white water actually feel like on the Balsa River?

Class III and IV rapids involve fast current, waves, and obstacles that require active paddling and quick reactions, but they're manageable for anyone in good physical condition with basic instruction. The Balsa River's upper section is the most challenging white water in the northern area, so you're paddling genuine rapids, not a gentle float.

Do I need rafting experience to book this, or will the guide teach me?

No prior experience is required. Your guide will teach you how to paddle and navigate the rapids as part of the trip. You need to be in good physical condition and at least 12 years old.

How long is the actual time on the water?

The full trip is 5 hours from pickup to drop-off in La Fortuna. That includes the 15-kilometer paddle down the river, two swimming and fruit stops along the way, and the drive to lunch and back to town.

What's included in the lunch, and can I request vegetarian?

Lunch is a Costa Rican casado — rice, black beans, plantains, salad, tortilla, and a protein of your choice (chicken, beef, pork, or fish). Vegetarian options are available; just let the operator know when you book.

Does the price cover everything, or are there extra charges?

The price includes hotel pickup within 6 kilometers of the office, all rafting equipment, the guide, fruit on the river, towels, water, and lunch. If your hotel is more than 6 kilometers away, extra pickups cost $40. Souvenir photos are available to purchase at the end of the trip.
