The experience
The Gulf of Papagayo sits close enough to the hotels along the coast that you can slip out for this activity in the middle of a sunny day and be back before evening. You'll ride your own jet ski for two hours, starting any time between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM to fit your schedule. The route follows the white sand beaches and passes Monkey Head Rock, a named landmark where the light is best for photographs, especially toward sunset.
What you see depends on the tide. At low tide, you'll steer into sea caves and walk inside them. At high tide, the route enters the mangrove channels instead, where white-faced monkeys hang in the trees along the shore and marine animals move through the water. The guide rides ahead and points out where to look, and you control the pace of your own jet ski as you follow the route.

Is this one for you?The activity runs at your own pace on the jet ski, so you control the speed and how long you linger at each stop. If you want to ride independently but have someone guide the route and point out where the wildlife appears, this setup gives you both.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I ride a jet ski if I've never done it before?
Yes. The activity suits all physical fitness levels, and the guide leads the route at a pace you can follow. You'll receive a lifejacket and life-saving equipment before you start.
What is Monkey Head Rock and why do people photograph it?
Monkey Head Rock is a named formation in the Gulf of Papagayo that the route passes. It's a landmark for photographs, especially in the light near sunset.
Will I see wildlife on the jet ski?
White-faced monkeys live in the trees along the mangrove channels and the beach shores, and they're usually visible in the trees. Marine animals move through the water as well, though sightings depend on the time of day and tide.
What happens if the tide is high when I go?
At high tide, the route enters the mangrove channels instead of the sea caves. You'll still ride the same two-hour route and see the same wildlife and landmarks. The tide just changes which part of the coast you explore.
Do I need to arrange my own transportation to the starting point?
No. Pickup is included from hotels in the Gulf of Papagayo area, so if you're staying at one of them, the activity can be organized near your hotel.
