Custom Costa Rica Day Trip from San Jose: 4WD & Local Guide
A day shaped by what interests you, not a fixed schedule
This is a private, full-day tour from San Jose where you and a local driver in a 4WD vehicle choose the direction in real time, whether that's toward Ballena Park to see whales and Nayaca Waterfalls, inland to Guanacaste's small towns and rainforest, or east to the Caribbean beaches near Limón. The itinerary stays flexible so you can linger at roadside fruit stands, detour to hidden viewpoints, or simply move at your own pace. A personal driver provides local insight. Bottled water and snacks are included. Admission fees, meals and activities like ATV rentals or parasailing are separate.

The experience
You arrive with a rough idea of where you want to go, or none at all, and a driver who knows the region well enough to suggest places and adjust on the fly. The 4WD vehicle handles the terrain between San Jose and wherever the day takes you: the southern route to Ballena Park passes Nayaca Waterfalls, where you can wade into the river if you want, and reaches beaches known for whale and dolphin sightings; the northern route climbs into Guanacaste's small towns and rainforest, a 3.5 to 4-hour drive that reveals the landscape in stages; the eastern route heads toward Limón and the Caribbean coast, where the vegetation and wildlife shift noticeably and the pace of life changes. Nothing is written in stone.
The driver stops whenever something catches your eye: a viewpoint, a local coffee stand, a market, a place to photograph. You set the rhythm. Because the vehicle is private and the schedule is yours, you're not waiting for a group to finish or moving on before you're ready. The 4WD handles rough roads and weather, and the air-conditioned cabin means you can rest between stops. Bottled water and snacks travel with you. Meals, entrance fees to attractions, and any paid activities (ATV rentals, parasailing, snorkeling tours, bike rentals) are your choice and cost.
The driver speaks English or Spanish and knows the region's history, food traditions, and where locals actually go. This isn't a curated highlights tour. It's a day built around curiosity and connection, where a roadside farm visit or a conversation in a small town can matter as much as a famous waterfall. You leave San Jose in the morning and return after roughly 13 to 14 hours, having seen and done exactly what you wanted.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I change my mind about where to go once the day starts?
Yes. The driver suggests routes and stops based on your interests, weather and what you want to see, and you decide together as the day unfolds. Nothing is locked in advance.
What's the difference between the Ballena Park route, Guanacaste and the Caribbean coast?
Ballena Park in the south centers on marine life (whales, dolphins, snorkeling), and includes Nayaca Waterfalls and beach time. Guanacaste in the northwest is rainforest, small towns with local food traditions, and Pacific beaches about 3.5 to 4 hours from San Jose. The Caribbean route near Limón offers different wildlife, a slower pace, and a completely different cultural feel from the Pacific side.
What meals and activities are included?
The tour includes bottled water and snacks. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are not included, so you choose where and what to eat. Activities like snorkeling tours, ATV rentals, parasailing and bike rentals cost extra and are booked as you go.
How does pickup work?
The driver picks you up from your San Jose location and returns you there at the end of the day. Confirm your pickup address when you book.
Is this tour suitable if I'm not in great shape?
The tour works for all fitness levels. It's not recommended only for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Most of the day is spent in the vehicle. Stops are at your own pace.
